Criteria & Eligibility
The Assemblage Art Fund provides grants for visual arts projects located within Salt Lake County that are collaborative in nature, alternative in practice, and engage a diverse local audience. Proposals may include: the work of an independent art space or collective, physical or online publications directly related to the visual arts, a media engagement project, the creation of a new artist residency, a series of public-facing performances or screenings, a new pop-up arts space or venue, or any other project, of any medium, that meets eligibility requirements and scoring criteria.
To be considered for any level of grant funding, applications must meet the following general eligibility criteria:
Primary Applicant
The proposed project has a primary applicant (lead artist/organizer) as the main grant contact.
Salt Lake County Residency
The primary applicant resides within Salt Lake County, is over 21 years of age, and is not currently enrolled as a student at a college or university.
Project Location
The project will occur within Salt Lake County (Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, West Valley, Magna, Emigration Canyon, Millcreek, Holladay, Murray, Taylorsville, Kearns, West Jordan, Midvale, Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Alta, South Jordan, Copperton, Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, Draper).
Visual Arts Based
The proposed project is anchored in a visual arts practice.
Collaborative
The project is either collaborative in nature or incorporates collaborative elements.
New & Independent
The project is not conducted by or in partnership with a 501(c)3 organization, and is not a sustaining project. The fund is meant to support short-term occurrences, events, and new collaborations that are ineligible for/overlooked by other funding sources.
Completed within Grant Cycle
The project will be completed within the 12-month grant cycle. In this context, “completed” refers to the goals outlined in the project application: for example, a project that results in establishing a new artist residency would be considered “complete” while the residency would become ongoing.
Publicly Accessible
The project will occur and be presented in a publicly accessible manner.
Assemblage Art Fund offers two tiers of funding based on the scale and stage of your project. Please read the descriptions carefully and apply to the tier that best aligns with your goals, timeline, and capacity. Both grants support collaborative, publicly accessible visual arts projects within Salt Lake County.
Process Grants
Process Grants are awards of $5,000 for individual artists incorporating collaborative elements into a solo project or smaller scale projects from a collaborative team. Process Grants support early-stage or small-scale projects from artists and collectives initiating new ideas, testing forms, or working at a more intimate scale. This grant is intended for projects that are in their beginning phases or benefit from lighter support; experimenting with a new method, building an early collaboration, or assembling a first iteration of something larger. Projects must include a collaborative or co-creative element and be presented in a publicly accessible format within Salt Lake County.
Project Grants
Project Grants are awards of $10,000 for major projects from collectives, teams, or an exceptional individual with proven capacity and a history of impactful collaborations. Project Grants support ambitious, collaborative visual arts projects with a clear plan for public presentation and engagement. Awarded artists, artist-organizers, and collectives will pursue larger-scale or more developed projects that demonstrate thoughtful collaboration, strong public engagement, and a clear visual arts focus. From building something new from the ground up or pushing an evolving practice in a new direction, applicants should propose an ambitious, defined project to be realized within a 12-month period in Salt Lake County.
Applicants are encouraged to creatively interpret the major project criteria by which grant awards will be made:
Collaborative in Nature
The project concept demonstrates a collaborative element as a core component of process or outcomes, including but not limited to: partnering directly with an unconventional art space (not a registered 501(c)3); incorporating community participation directly into project outcomes; utilizing existing landscape, weather, or wildlife as an active collaborator; working with local skilled laborers or contracted workers to introduce new skills or materials in the project.
Public Facing, Locally Engaged
The project concept demonstrates an intention to expand audiences and invites communities to participate in local visual arts. This could include utilizing a nontraditional venue, leveraging online platforms to reach new audiences, creating audience investment through thoughtful partnerships/collaborations, or other means of engagement.
Alternative in Practice
The project is innovative, surprising, unique, or experimental, and expands the practice of the artist or collective in new ways. This could include non-traditional materials, research methodology, means of presentation/publication/exhibition/performance, use of technology, or other components of the project process.
